This most recent version adds support for every current MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mini. As with any settings-tinkering software, you'll want to use smcFanControl judiciously-but fortunately this application always keeps fans in automatic mode (so speed will increase along with CPU load) and never lets you set the fan speed below the Apple-recommended minimum. SmcFanControl lets you monitor the current temperature (in Celsius or Fahrenheit), assign different minimum speeds for each fan using sliders, and even apply different settings when your power source changes (for example, going back to default fan speed when using battery power). Hold down Shift + Control + Option and the Power button for 5 seconds. This free, GPL-licensed utility has a single purpose: letting you increase the minimum speed of built-in fans, so your Intel computer will run cooler. If you've got burnt thighs from an old MacBook Pro or you notice that your computer is always overheating and crashing from using CPU-intensive apps (like playing PC games in a virtual Windows environment), you might want to check out smcFanControl. Then, open Finder, select Applications in the sidebar and delete smcFanControl. I'm using CUbase 6.0.2 with OSX 10.6.8.Just curious.SmcFanControl lets the user set the minimum speed of the build-in fans. First, quit smcFanControl in the menu bar. Or maybe it is only a dual core i7?.then the figures should be 35-40% out of 200%. 35-40% is 1/10 of your computers capacity. It allows you to increase your minimum fan speed to make your Intel Mac run cooler. I'm using CUbase 6.0.2 with OSX 10.6.8.That is normal. smcFanControl lets the user set a minimum speed for built-in fans. Do those numbers seem normal? Anything I can set on my laptop or in cubase to get it to run cooler? Doesn't that seem high? The cpu meter in cubase is down near the bottom. In OSX Activity Monitor, the CPU for cubase says about 35-40%, with 45 threads, and 450mb memory - that is in stop mode, with maybe 10 native plugins and one VST instrument (Geist). The best alternative is SpeedFan, which is free. There are more than 10 alternatives to Macs Fan Control for Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. I read in a forum that firewire on the I7 macs adds to the heat issue (I'm using an RME fireface 800). Macs Fan Control is described as Monitor and control fans on Apple computers with a simple and efficient user interface and is an app. I used it to record in cubase and nuendo and never had an issue (though i wanted more CPU power so I upgraded). The fans on my 2010 were never a problem. Also like that it shows temperature + fan speed in menu bar icon :-) 2. And I believe best sensor to use is CPU PECI. Its possible that there are solutions to control fan speed on. So the approach of smcFanControl does not work. But it makes it almost unusable to record near. Min & max temperature for fan speed scaling). No, PPC based macs dont have an SMC controller. SmcFanControl lets the user set the minimum speed of the build-in fans. I brought it to Apple and they said it's normal with the i7 chip since it runs hotter. If you've got burnt thighs from an old MacBook Pro or you notice that your computer is always overheating and crashing from using CPU-intensive apps (like playing PC games in a virtual Windows environment), you might want to check out smcFanControl. It seems like the fans are constantly running. I recently upgraded from my 2010 Macbook Pro 13 " (the cheaper model) to a 2011 macbook pro I7 13 (the more expensive model).
